Layers of flavours, textures and colours make these gorgeous bowls a healthy, one-dish adventure
The demand for fast yet fresh, healthy and hearty meals has led to the growing popularity of one-dish food bowls. They come in several variants including grain, veggie, poké and even superfood, and are flavour-packed, making them incredibly easy to love.
A refreshing Hawaiian raw fish dish, poké (pronounced POH-kay) bowls comprise a mix of raw cubes of seafood (usually ahi tuna or salmon) in a soy sauce-based marinade and served over rice or greens. At A Poké Theory, diners can customise their own bowls according to their preferences.
They can pick from sushi rice, lemon herb quinoa or romaine lettuce for the base, and four different flavoured cuts for the raw fish, such as shoyu tuna, spicy garlic sesame tuna, and mayo salmon or avocado miso salmon. Last but not least, jazz up the bowl with toppings such as furikake, pineapple, cherry tomato and nori flakes.

One of the hottest health food trends on our shores is none other than the açaí (pronounced ‘ah-sigh-ee’) bowl. Even if you’ve never tried this delicious superfood, chances are you’ve stumbled across an Instagram picture of one of these gorgeous purple bowls.

Açaí berries are packed with very high levels of antioxidants and heart-healthy fats along with loads of essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin K, copper, magnesium, potassium, and many more. Some establishments have discovered ways to serve vegetables that are full of flavour. Over at Kitchen by Food Rebel, chef-owner Elika Mather has brilliantly created a zoodle bolognaise, which features strips of zucchini swathed in an umami-laden ragu. So tasty and hearty, you won’t notice that the “pasta” is actually made from vegetables.
For a quick salad fix, there are plenty of healthy eateries that allow diners to customise their own veggie bowls. For instance, at The Salad Shop, diners can pick one leafy base out of three choices and six toppings.

Grain bowls are all the rage with Singapore’s increasingly health-conscious dining crowd seeking healthier alternatives. One of our favourite places for a wholesome grain bowl fix is Grain Traders, where diners get to pick a grain, a protein, a hot vegetable, two cold vegetables, a topping and a sauce.
A winning combination here is the El Hibaro, comprising a grilled striploin with salsa verde, charred vegetables, wafu tomato, bean sprout salad and brown rice. For a lighter option, swap the brown rice for quinoa or soba noodles.
