At the World Gourmet Summit’s Awards of Excellence 2017 held on Monday, chef Petrina Loh snagged two accolades for Morsels, while chef Eric Teo received a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the local culinary scene.

On 27 March, the World Gourmet Summit’s 17th Awards of Excellence 2017 honoured local and regional talents for excellence in the culinary and hospitality fields. Mr Peter Knipp, founder of the World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence, opened the ceremony by congratulating the National and Junior Culinary teams for their victories last year.

“For the first time ever, the charity dinner will be cooked solely by local talent, and we’re very grateful for that,” said Mr Knipp.

There are three new awards added to this year’s award lineup: Restaurant of the Year (regional), Restauranteur of the Year and Baker of the Year. Local chef Petrina Loh was the biggest winner of the night, with two awards for her five-year-old fusion restaurant Morsels: Chef’s choice (Western cuisine) and Huber’s Restaurant of the Year.

She was most certainly taken aback by the results. “I really didn’t expect it, looking at the other entrants in my categories—some of them are Michelin-starred. But it’s an encouragement to keep doing what I’m doing—focusing on quality ingredients, fermentation, strong flavours, not following trends—things that aren’t for everybody,” she said.

It may be his second time winning in this category, but he doesn’t take the win for granted. “It’s a lot more meaningful this time round, and I really have to thank my team for this. We’re going to continue doing better.”

Chef Eric Teo of Singapore Chef’s Association and Mr Lee Loong Sheng of Taiwan Formosa Chefs Association were also honoured with lifetime achievement awards for their contributions to the F&B industry.
